December 30, 2019
Summary:
We all know the on-going debate of pro-life vs pro-choice. Unfortunately, the debate has gotten more and more violent since the years have gone on since Row vs Wade which made abortion legal. In this podcast, Rachel Maddow dives into the problems that arose from Roe vs Wade and the personal violence that has occurred in recent years. Justice Blackman, who wrote the statement making abortion legal in the United States, was mentioned in the podcast. The violence that came from the courts decisions were abundant. Maddow tells of the many abortion clinics that were bombed. Pro-Life and "Army of God" anti-abortionist would protest infant of clinics and even harm patients and doctors. Maddow mentions one doctor, George Tiller, who was murder for the position he held in the clinic. Many cases around the country were similar to this one and violence was spreading as the years went by. With violence rising, the number of clinics and qualified doctors in the country were decreasing. Since there were less doctors, the women would have to travel farther to find help and the services would cost more money. This lead to women turning to unhealthy abortion tactic that put themselves in danger. The debate is not over when it comes to abortion, but compromises may be on the horizon.
Response:
Hearing the tragic stories of women facing the decisions that come with pregnancy is very scary. Women are thrown into reality and are forced to make decisions with the whole world watching. The debate between abortion is a serious one that connects so many women to societies eyes everyday. The question that comes to my mind is will the violence ever stop? Looking at history, it is amazing to me that abortion was ever made legal. Our values as a country were built off of Christian religion, and late term abortions are not exactly biblical. Yet, our country and some of its powerful leaders came together to give women a choice. That is one big step for America. On the other hand, violence against women is something that has been seen through every age of history on earth. It is hard to tell if women will ever be able to stand up for their personal decisions and not be criticized by society, but I believe if we came to a decision to let women have a choice we can end all violence to those choices. Women should not have be ashamed of choices that are legally given to them.
